It depends - in some instances, I've only seen the actor in one role, so it might be more precise to say the model was the character, not the performer. In other cases, when it's someone I've seen in many roles, I'm better able to use characteristics that are common to all the character s/he's played.
Enjoyed this on a lot. I was curious if the author when using an actor as a character model ises the actor in a particular role or in general.
